Equipe Classic Racing Acquires Sports Prototype Cup and Zeo Prototypes, creating Equipe Sports Prototypes Unveiling Ambitious Plans for 2025

Updated: Nov 29

Equipe Classic Racing has announced the acquisition of the pan-European Sports Prototype Cup and the UK-based Zeo Prototypes series, laying the foundation for an all-new multi-class racing series, “Equipe Sports Prototypes.” Backed by significant investment and a vision for growth, the newly-formed series aims to become a premier destination for prototype racing.

Under this new banner, Equipe Sports Prototypes will merge the existing Sports Prototype Cup and Zeo Prototypes into a single, high-profile grid, bringing together lightweight sports prototypes from a variety of marques. The series will offer a multi-marque racing environment designed to attract diverse competitors and manufacturers, with Equipe Classic Racing pledging strong support for drivers and teams through premium services and top-tier circuits.

Successful F1 Foundations, a Bright Future

The Sports Prototype Cup, founded in 2019, has already made waves in the motorsport world, with classes for Revolution and Radical models, along with an open class that has featured entries from Praga, Norma, and Ligier. Notably, it earned a prestigious spot as a Formula 1 support race at the 2020 Portuguese and 2021 Italian Grands Prix, boosting its reputation under the guidance of Series Director James Bailey and the PitBox91 PR agency.

Meanwhile, the Zeo Prototypes series, established in 2021 and led by Grace Williams, has quickly risen to prominence as a premier British series, featuring some of the country’s fastest sports racing cars with the backing of Zeo Intelligent Energy.

Equipe’s Vision for Growth

The acquisition signifies Equipe Classic Racing’s entry into contemporary motorsport, building on its experience in historic racing. Equipe Partner Rob Cull explained the strategy behind the acquisition: “The acquisition of these two important series and combining them with our own ambitious plans for a new prototype series provides a stable long-term environment for existing prototype racers and for drivers and teams planning to invest in cars from the marques that will be eligible to race with us. Equipe Classic Racing is run by drivers for drivers, and this fits our strategy to grow in the contemporary racing market, building on our successful historic racing events creating a community of drivers, a premium club feel and camaraderie in the paddock are a high priority. Our 2025 calendar will feature the UK’s best circuits, including Silverstone Grand Prix, before expanding our reach into international events.”

James Bailey, the current promoter of the Sports Prototype Cup, expressed optimism about the future of the series under Equipe’s guidance: “As the Cup enters its seventh year, we wanted to ensure that our loyal drivers, teams and manufacturers had a strong, stable and forward-looking owner to take it to a new level. From the very first discussions with Equipe Classic Racing, it was clear that they had the infrastructure, investment plans and vision to create a brilliant new future for prototype racing. Ensuring that our customers, including our loyal manufacturer partners, have great events at the best circuits was a priority in this agreement. I'm excited about the Cup’s future with a new owner.”
